Niseko Hirafu ... Niseko has something for everyone, suiting all ages and abilities, with an almost guaranteed promise of getting some of its famous powder snow. The ski area is huge and, for the most part, well-connected. There are also buses running between the four resorts to get you back to your base. Much of the night life is centred in Grand Hirafu, with a wide selection of accommodation. Despite the closing of some services during the Spring season, the snow was still falling and of good quality. Niseko is definitely worth visiting if you're considering a skiing holiday in Japan. Niseko Hirafu ... There was a decent range of slopes and we loved the powder snow - even in April! Grand Hirafu ski school was really good value with excellent (English speaking) instructors, who knew their stuff and made skiing fun. The main problems for us were overpriced food and drink (even more than we would normally expect at a ski resort), and the fact that although the season runs until May, lifts, international ATMs and many bars and restaurants start to close at the end of March, so although the slopes are quite quiet, there isn't much of an atmosphere and getting money and decent food can be difficult. Niseko ... Went early March and the snow was still great. Skiied mostly off piste, between trees and the bowls. Don't come if you want sunshine skiing, as it snows often.
